Senior Project Making
Golden Years Solid

BERKELEY — Violet Williams of Silver Ridge Park East loves it when Tuesday rolls around. She attends a weekly brunch, which features a professional speaker, then participates in an hourlong tai chi workout with other members of the retirement community. "The meetings have all been very informative," said Williams, 65. "And the tai chi is very good for seniors because it improves your balance — something that we all lose as we get older."
The activities are part of the NORC Project of Ocean County, which provides a network of social and support services to four demonstration communities: Holiday City Silverton in Dover Township, Silver Ridge Park East in Berkeley, the original Leisure Village in Lakewood and Greenbriar in Brick.
NORC — Naturally Occurring Retirement Community — works to assist older adults who wish to continue living independently and safely, and to help neighbors meet neighbors.
NORC had its genesis in 2004, when Rep. H. James Saxton and Rep. Christopher H. Smith, both R-N.J., requested a grant from the Administration on Aging. They worked with officials from the United Jewish Communities, and several counties in New Jersey received funds: Ocean, Bergen, Atlantic and the Union and Essex area.
The need for Ocean was glaring — 26.7 percent of the county's 510,916 residents are older than 60 years old, according to 2000 Census figures. More than 22.2 percent of Ocean County's residents are older than 65 — the largest percentage of any county in the state.

Transportation Study in Age Restricted Community

The Ocean County NJ NORC Project examined the issues of transportation for seniors aging in place in an age restricted community. The lack of intra-community transportation networks within age restricted communities severely limits the ability of older residents to safely age in place. Current utilization of the community's bus service and public transportation through Ocean Ride as well as satisfaction and needs were evaluated. Click here to view pdf Power Point presentation.
