Wedding coming up?  How to be a good in-law

Rita Sason, Director JFCS

Spring has arrived, and with it: wedding season. Much planning goes into the wedding. Little girls dream for years what the wedding will be like. Brides, grooms, and their families focus on all of the details. What can be forgotten in all of the dreams and fantasies is that it is not only the bride and groom who are entering into marriage, but families will also be tied together by the marriage.
According to Peter Steinglass, M.D. of the Ackerman Institute for the Family, “The in-law situation is a frequent issue in marriage counseling. When family members feel slights instead of support, when people fret about what is said to whom, tension mounts and everyone suffers.” The good news is that usually all an in-law needs to foster a good, warm relationship is to follow a few simple rules.

Dear Bubbe (Mixed marriage) June 2010

Dear Bubbe:
My sister and I are very close even though she now lives in Arizona. My niece, her daughter, is getting married this fall and of course we will be invited to the wedding. My sister is excited, but I am not, because unfortunately, she is marrying someone who is not Jewish. My husband and I have made it a practice not to attend interfaith weddings. This may have caused some tension within friendships, but it was something that we were prepared to live with even if it strained the friendship. But this is now family, and suddenly it isn’t simple anymore. We don’t know what to do: Attend the wedding and go against our beliefs or create a permanent split between my sister and me? We do not know what’s right anymore.

Seniors get a chance to get out and about

by Marshall Kurtzman

An hour’s walk in June on the Point Pleasant Beach boardwalk is a frequent activity for many living in Ocean County, but not for those individuals who can no longer drive. For two groups of seniors, however, Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Ocean County (JFCS) provided the opportunity for this event, as well as a similar one, in October. It was a rare opportunity to see, smell, and hear the ocean, and to enjoy this experience along with others. Even the ride on the van became an ideal opportunity for socialization.
